Last weekend marked a special celebration as we celebrated our cherished volunteer, Laillí de Buitléar turning 91!
Surrounded by family, neighbours and friends, the event held at the Carmelite Monastery was a joyous occasion honoring a truly remarkable woman.
We are truly privileged to have Laillí as part of our Tidy Towns group. Her contributions and spirit continue to enrich our community, and her 91st birthday celebration was a testament to all she has done for Delgany. Here’s to many more wonderful years with Laillí, from all your Tidy Town friends.
Delgany Tidy Towns would like to thank everyone who contributed towards our event for Laillí. Dooleys Auctioneers, Lowick Homes, Cedar Building Company, The Horse & Hound, The Wicklow Arms, Farrelly’s Butchers, The Grocer, Centra Delgany, Bear Paw for their scrumptious sandwiches and a special shout out to June, who pulled the whole thing together.

🆘 Have you seen this plant? 👀
Himalayan Balsam is a pretty pink plant that was first introduced to Ireland as a garden plant, but soon found its way out of gardens and into the countryside, where it has been spreading rapidly ever since and is quickly becoming one of our most aggressive invasive weeds, mainly colonising riverbanks, waste ground and wet woodlands.
Problems caused by Himalayan Balsam include:
🔴 Elimination of local biodiversity.
🔴 Erosion to riverbanks after winter dieback.
🔴 Impedes access to riverbanks for both inspection and recreational use.
🔴 Quickly becoming one of our most aggressive invasive weeds.
If you have seen Himalayan Balsam when out and about locally, please let us know. To report Himalayan Balsam locations please email your sightings and their location to delganytidytowns@gmail.com.

Adding Some Christmas Cheer To The Village
Delgany Tidy Towns added a touch of sparkle to the village this month while also working closely with the North Pole to make sure all of Santa's letters from the village reach Santa in time for Christmas.
Santa & the elves are extremely busy at the moment checking their list twice, however during their hot chocolate breaks they do like to reply to some of Santa's letters. We recommend you add Mammy, Daddy or perhaps Granny or Grandad's email address to your letter. You never know you might be one of the lucky boys and girls that receive a reply.
The Delgany Santa Post Box is now located in the heart of the village outside the Delgany Market.
Thank you to our Delgany Tidy Town volunteers for making our village merry and bright this Christmas.
Delgany Tidy Towns are in the process of setting up a Delgany Men's Shed. 🛠️

National Reuse Month
October 2023
What is Reuse Month?
October is Ireland’s National Reuse Month. Reuse is about valuing our stuff, by using and reusing it for as long and as often as possible. This avoids the need to extract raw materials, manufacture and distribute new stuff, and avoids waste thereby cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions. Why not make a commitment to reuse as many things as possible to save the environment.
Reduce & Reuse
Tips and advice on reducing waste and reusing certain items around the house.
When people think of being Waste Aware, recycling springs to mind. Better still, though, is reducing our waste by reusing things as much as possible. Here are some tips to help reducing your waster and reusing certain items.
Reduce
Avoid heavily packaged goods
Buy loose fruit and vegetables
Buy products in big containers (like washing powder)
Bring your own bags shopping and skip the government levy
Use refillable or rechargeable products: pens, batteries, cameras
Try growing your own vegetables
Stop junk mail
Repair broken goods as much as possible
Share newspapers, magazines and books with friends and relatives
Use longer-lasting energy-saving CFL light bulbs
Use reusable nappies rather than disposables
Be creative!
Reuse
Again, what you'll reuse will often depend on your own individual factors. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Reuse clothes: charity shops
If you have clothes and other items that you no longer need, donating to a charity shop is a great way to have them reused. For a good list, see the The Irish Charity Shops Association.
Reuse books: exchange programmes
Many children reuse their siblings' schoolbooks, but why not reuse books from other families who are finished with them? All of Wicklow County Councils environmental and recycling centres have book exchange facilities and secondhand schoolbook shops in the summer. Also, School Book Exchange , run in the summer months by Wicklow County Council offers excellent quality reuse school and college books. Books can be purchased for a small fee of €2-€3.
Reuse in the home
Use old jars and tubs for storage
Use washable dishcloths instead of throwaway disposable wipes
Use scrap paper for writing notes
Use a lunch box instead of foil or cling film
Mend clothes and get shoes reheeled so they last longer
Useful Local Reuse Websites
One of the best ways to reuse items is by using one of the online secondhand goods swap sites.
Freecycle groups allow you to give your stuff away free to others, and also to request something that you need.
Below is just a sample of some of the Freecycle groups across Wicklow.
There are also specific freecycle groups for Wicklow Buy & Sell Children’s Clothes & Toys.
The results are in!

The results are in!

Village Clean Up Weekend
Delgany Tidy Towns need volunteers for our upcoming Village Clean Up Weekend taking place on
May 13th & 14th, from 10am-1pm.
Come join us and help keep our heritage village beautiful. Even if you can only give an hour of your time, it will be time well spent helping neighbours and friends clean up our village and its surrounding areas. Volunteers will be litter picking, sweeping footpaths and doing a big tidy-up.
ALL WELCOME! This is a great opportunity for people from across our community to meet up and help keep our village litter free.
Meeting at 10am each day in the Old Burial Ground in the heart of Delgany Village and then splitting into groups to clean one of the 10 Zones across Delgany.
We ask that all volunteers wear gloves.
We have a limited amount of equipment so we ask that you bring any other gardening tools that might be useful across the weekend, such as gloves, brushes, spades, hoes, secateurs etc.
If you would like to volunteer you can register online here
or meet the DTT team in the Old Burial Ground, Delgany Village at 10am on May 13th & 14th.

Delgany Community Council would like to congratulate the Tidy Towns group who organized and supported these application, led by our own passionate biodiversity expert and resident Keith Scanlon. Groups are being supported to develop actions which will deliver real results with a Community Biodiversity Plan. Communities will work with an ecologist to draw up a community biodiversity action plan within their local community or with two or 3-5 local landowners. Please email if you are interested in joining these initiatives!
